Cub Scout Pack 284 | Wayne, PA

Hello Everyone,

Our next two meetings are Den Meetings at Wayne Elementary.  They are on Oct 11th and Oct 25th from 7-8pm.

In between we have our trip(s) to Hawk Mountain (http://www.hawkmountain.org/).  Hawk Mountain is located in Kempton, PA which is about 80 mins from Wayne.

Founded in 1934, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is the world’s first refuge for birds of prey and an international center for raptor conservation.  The 2,600-acre mountaintop preserve offers incredible scenic overlooks, eight miles of trail, a Visitor Centernative plant garden, and more.  If you look at the website you can see the birds that are spotted each day during the fall migration which is taking place right now.  Along with many different hawks you will see mention of bald eagles, osprey, golden eagles, falcons, etc…

We are targeting our visit to coincide with a 2pm showing of their fascinating Raptor’s Up Close! Program which offers the chance to see a live hawk, falcon or owl, and to learn what puts these winged predators at the top of nature’s food chain.  We then intend a short walk to the South Lookout and a longer ¾ mile hike to the North Lookout where the majority of the sightings and watching takes place.  Although we will not formally do so as a group there are many other great hikes that you can do during our visit.

We are arranging two trips to try and help everyone work around sports and other commitments.  We will have a Saturday trip for which you should plan on leaving the Wayne area at about 12noon so you can be there and ready for the 2pm program and then repeat that on Sunday.  As usual, admission for the scouts will be covered by the pack – siblings (6-12) will be $3 and adults $7 (I’m still working on a group rate so this might change.

I would suggest brining a small backpack with water and binoculars if you have them.  If not, they do rent binoculars in the visitor center for a nominal fee.

Please let me know by Sunday night which trip you would like to attend along with how many people will be participating.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Den Meeting Tonight

Hello Everyone,

A quick reminder that we have a Den meeting tonight at WES unless your Den leader has told you otherwise.  The meeting will start at 7pm with some quick announcements and then we will disperse to Den specific activities.

Popcorn

Store sales have gone fantastically.  We have sold at Wawa, the Vitamin Store, Walmart, and in and around Wayne.  These sales have gotten us a great start but now we need everyone to visit their neighbors, friends, relatives, etc… and make a final push over the next couple of weeks.  This is our only fundraiser of the year so it is very important that everyone chips in and does their part so that we can subsidize all of our activities.  We will have more order forms at WES tonight.

Dues

If you have not yet registered your son and/or paid your dues please try to do so tonight at WES.  Bob Higgins or I will be happy to work with you tonight to get the paperwork taken care of and give you your son’s handbook for the year in return.

Hawk Mountain

We have had a good response on Hawk Mountain and will be running two trips as planned.  I am still adding people to the list so if you haven’t responded yet and would like to go please let me know tonight or send me an e-mail ASAP.

Message from our Cubmaster

Hello Everyone,

I hope that you all had a great summer.  Now that school has started it is that time of year to start thinking about Cub Scouts again.

We are going to kick off our year again with a meeting at Fenimore Woods this coming Sunday (the 24th).  We will meet at 5pm (for about an hour) and will have hot dogs and s’mores available for the boys (and siblings).  We will also have some games for the boys to keep them busy and to tire them out.  This is also a great opportunity to pay your dues for the year ($65 as it has been for a number of years).

We have a number of great events planned for this year including trips to Hawk Mountain, Fort Mifflin, rock climbing, a bike rodeo, and another special indoor overnight.  We will be getting the final schedule out to everyone very shortly but here is the first part for Sept and Oct.

9/25 – Kick Off – Fenimore Woods – 5pm

9/27 – Popcorn Kick Off – WES Gym – 7pm

10/11 – Den Meeting – WES – 7pm

10/15 – Hawk Mountain (trip #1) – TBD

10/16 – Hawk Mountain (trip #2) – TBD

10/25 – Den Meeting – WES – 7pm

Please make an extra effort to be there for Tuesday’s Popcorn kickoff, as you know from past years this is our only fundraiser for the year and supports all of our activities.
